OK, so what do you need? Your work is limited to the lights and lighting on the standard models. On US cars, the rear tail lights have red indicators, and they share a bulb with the brake light, so when braking and turning the brake light will flash as an indicator. To get around this, you need to change the back light units usually, and re-wire the car a little in the boot. You need some back light units. The pictures on the right show you first the original US light cluster. Below which, is an after market European rear light made by ABC design. RRP on a pair of those is £179 but you will find them on e-bay for £120 ish. A clever cove at Surrey Mustang makes UK compliant ones by modifying the US ones to make what was a reflector into an indicator, they look great if you want to spend £160+ VAT and shipping on a pair. (Also pictured.) Some other people convert the reverse light on the original to an indicator. That still leaves you with no fog lamp or reverse light, so you must fit messy ones into the bumper or below it. We recommend the EU style tail lights with the clear/amber centre panel, much easier, and EU marked.
You also need to install side repeaters on the front wings. What kind you use is a personal taste option, many people use the triangle Ford Mondeo type as pictured. They are inexpensive and if you get the stick on ones, very simple to fit. E-bay, Halfords or any good auto accessory store will yield a pair of side repeaters. LED ones and clear view are fine, (as long as they flash orange) check they are EU marked. Expect to pay £10-£20 for a pair. Your next thing is the headlamps. US headlamps have a flat beam so will pass an SVA test on dip and main beam. What they dont have is an integral sidelight, and you need a white sidelight for UK/EU lighting regulations. Your choice here is either to drill and insert a small white LED or 1.5w bulb and holder beside the existing headlamp bulb, or buy a pair of BMW style 'Angel Eye' headlamps as pictured on the right. Again, ABC design make these and e-bay usually yields a set at around £150. The 'Angel Eye' is the sidelight in such a unit, and they are UK/EU/SVA compliant.
So we have covered the rear lights, the headlights and the side repeaters. Other than that, you need the bits and pieces to change the wiring to make this new stuff work. So what else do you need? Some automotive cable in various colours, an illuminated switch suitable for the fog lamps and four relays. The relays you need are low current devices. Do not use standard 'automotive' style relays. The average Automotive relay has a coil resistance of about 60-90 Ohms, where as a relay more suitable, will have a value of about 1000 Ohms. You really do need to put a back EMF protection diode across ANY relay coil connected to an 'electronic' output. This will minimize the back EMF voltage across the SJB* outputs. You will also need some plastic cable ducting (look under the bonnet if unsure - that stuff) and the usual assortment of connectors, spades, tape and cable ties that should be in any automotive toolbox. And thats about it! How to do it you will find on the other page, below I shall explain a basic principle about wiring on these cars that you need to know.
*The lighting system on these Mustangs is controlled by a little box of tricks called a Smart Junction Box. (SJB) This is a sensitive piece of equipment with low tolerances for overload. A new one is a few hundred quid so you don't want to blow yours. This is the item that the specialists pay most attention to when doing an SVA conversion, fooling it to make it think it is doing the same job and powering the same bulbs as before. No significantly greater loads on any existing circuits is your aim, so you do not just link your back lights off your front ones or a few months later you need a new SJB. This is what the relays are for, the existing circuits will switch the relays and the actual power will come from elsewhere thus bypassing the SJB. |
