The tongue-in-cheek cover, which features a scantily-clad Russian woman (actually the co-author Olga Maslova) climbing out of a packing box clutching her passport, has already caused some controversy among feminist groups and made the book’s sales jump, thanks to the unsought publicity.
The book corrects common misperceptions and enlightens men about what Russian women really want and how to woo them successfully. Issues including age differences, language barriers and how to deal with dishonest agencies are explored with candor and common sense. As are tips on traveling to Russia to meet potential brides and handling visa and residency issues. The final chapters offer practical advice on post-marital adaptation, overcoming cultural issues and maintaining a stable family.
Maslova and Smith have also set up a global internet advice forum for their readers and any who might be contemplating an international marriage. The book is simply “excellent”. It is factual without being offensive. It’s helpful without being overbearing. It is instructive without being condescending. I didn’t read ANYTHING in the book that I think is bad or unwise advice. I made my first visit to Russia in 1997 and have been happily married to a RW since 2002. In that light, the book basically says pretty much what I’d say if I had the time, patience or creative ability to write a book myself. IMHO it is the BEST book on this topic that I have read, and I’ve read just about all of ‘em.

The writing is fluid; the presentation is logical and the content is exceptionally useful. The author should be very pleased with his handiwork. And men at virtually any stage of their search for a lady from Russia, Ukraine or other former Soviet Union country would be well-advised to buy a copy and read it carefully, taking the advice to heart. In one single source there is now a wealth of current and useful information that will allow any man to avoid virtually all the pitfalls and take all the right steps for a successful relationship with a lady from the former Soviet Union. Having spent a lot of time in Russia as a professional journalist I was very curious on seeing the title at first glance. After reading, there was simply no question that the author of “Russian Bride Guide” knew his stuff. The book offers the pleasant experience of reading something which flows so smoothly and is so easy to absorb, that it is matched only by the breadth and wealth of information for the reader.
My favourite section was the advice on culture, mindset and worldview which the authors made fun and interesting to read. Even the advice on where to look in the FSU is very helpful and the author’s experience over many trips by air and car give the reader a primer on how to handle flights, hotels, taxi’s, restaurants, apartments and so many other travel essentials.
Without a doubt “Russian Bride Guide” is easy to read and worth recommending to others. The authors have created something which genuinely offers the “inside scoop” that is crucial to a successful search and will show you how a girl from the former Soviet Union can make your life complete. It is an absolute must-read for any man looking to Russia for a wife.

I’m just gathering information right now, and this book covers the topics from beginning to end (starting with reflecting on your thoughts to issues that arise after you marry and she is living with you), with resources for further information. I read it in almost on sitting…but had to get some sleep before work. I did purchase other books on the subject, but couldn’t put this one down, in fact I’m rereading it again.

This book is Fabulous, I could not put it down. It is the only possible starting point for those serious minded gentlemen who are seeking marriage to a serious FSU lady. It is superbly written and flows through the subject matter with the greatest of ease. You, as I was, will be sorry to have reached the end of this book. I heard one of the authors in an interview on BBC local radio recently talking about “mail order brides” and Russian women, and searched out the book. I found the many positive USA Amazon reviews first.
I enjoyed the book very much. It covered everything I wanted to know, and a whole lot more that I didn’t know I needed to know! I thought Chapter Four entitled “Age differences and what Russian women want” was particularly informative.
What was a nice surprise is there is a connected resources website listed in the book with links to trusted agencies, translators, visa information, etc. Also, the authors have a large Russian women information and discussion internet forum. I have since joined the forum and am getting more great tips from there as well.
I read a couple of e-books on this subject before, and I was not too impressed. This one was written by people who clearly know Russian women and Russian society very well indeed.
